Media Resources: Press ReleaseBay Federal Credit Union Employees and Members Raise $24,846 to Support Victims of Haiti Earthquake Capitola, CA – March 26, 2010–
When Bay Federal Credit Union employees learned of the devastating 7.0 Earthquake that hit Haiti on January 13, 2010, they quickly took action to help the survivors of the disaster. The day after the quake, Bay Federal had set up an earthquake relief fund to collect financial donations for priority needs in Haiti - food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and search efforts - through the efforts of the American Red Cross. That quick action paid off. In less than two months, a total of $24,846.86 was donated by Bay Federal members, employees, and community residents to help rebuild the lives of the earthquake survivors. Chapter of the American Red Cross. Wright accepted the donated funds on behalf of the American Red Cross, which has led the rescue and relief efforts in Haiti. Wright mentioned that although global contributions to Haiti have topped $2 billion, “Haitian Government officials estimate that a total of $11.5 billion will be needed to rebuild the infrastructure” of the struggling nation. Immediately following Bay Federal’s announcement of their earthquake relief fund, donations began pouring in. Wanting to do as much as they could to build the fund, Bay Federal employees made personal contributions and orchestrated a series fundraisers, including a rummage sale held in the parking lot of their Capitola branch. "As soon as we heard the news about the earthquake, we knew we had to help the people,” said Bay Federal President and CEO Carrie Birkhofer. “Our employees jumped right in with their own donations and fundraising ideas. I’m extremely proud of their generosity.” Other credit unions and credit union service organizations across the U.S. also rushed to aid the estimated 3 million earthquake victims. The Credit Union National Association (CUNA) and the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) joined together to make a $20,000 donation for victims in Haiti through the National Credit Union Foundation Disaster Relief Fund, a relief effort that directs funds to help credit union employees, volunteers and members in times of disaster. According to WOCCU, there is an active credit union movement in Haiti made up of 175 credit unions serving more than 400,000 members. About Bay Federal Credit Union
