Get Help with Money, Bills, and Feeling Better

If you think you need help with paying bills, getting food, dealing with school/work, connecting with people, or just finding something to do, here are some resources that might help.

Important Considerations when Seeking Financial Help:

● Put vulnerable people first. If you can afford to pay your bills right now, please WAIT to use these resources so that people with more urgent needs can get help first.

● Visit the website BEFORE you call. Websites may be the easiest place to get information. There may be very few people available to answer the phone, and they are trying to help everyone at once.

● Send an email or message on the company’s website or through a mobile app if you can’t find information online.

● When you call, you may have to wait. Be patient, be kind, and be prepared to leave a message and wait for a call back.

● Some businesses will be able to help you, but some are having troubles of their own. Try to be understanding as you seek assistance.

Payment Assistance for Loans, Credit Cards, Utilities, Insurance, Other Services
Sign up to delay/defer payment due dates or reduce your rates. Not all businesses and organizations offer assistance.

Visit websites of the businesses and organizations you pay. Use email and messaging options before calling if you can.
Contact your landlord to ask about rent discounts or other options. Remember that landlords may also be dealing with money shortages of their own and may not be able to help you right now.
The Help With Bills page at USA.gov has information about temporary income assistance and getting help with medical bills, prescription medication, utilities, and telephone bills.

Disability Income Assistance

If you have been exposed to Coronavirus and cannot work, talk to your employer or file a Disability Insurance claim.
Unemployment or Reduced Hours

If your work hours have been reduced or your employer has closed because of the Coronavirus emergency, or if your child’s school is closed and you are working fewer hours because you need to care for them, you can file an Unemployment Insurance claim.
Paid Family Leave and Sick Leave

If you are unable to work because you're caring for a sick or quarantined family member with Coronavirus, talk to your employer or find out how to file a Paid Family Leave claim.
Federal Income Tax Relief

The federal tax filing and payment due date has been postponed to July 15, 2020.
California Income Tax Relief

California taxpayers can wait to file 2019 California tax returns and make certain tax payments until June 15, 2020.
DMV 60-day Payment/Renewal Extension

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is providing an automatic 60-day extension on driver’s license or vehicle registration renewals with expiration dates beginning March 16, 2020.
Small Business Administration Disaster Loans

If your business has suffered substantial economic injury as a result of the Coronavirus emergency, you can apply for a low-interest federal disaster loan.
Federal Student Loans Forbearance

To provide relief to student loan borrowers during the COVID-19 national emergency, federal student loan borrowers are automatically being placed in an administrative forbearance, which allows you to temporarily stop making your monthly loan payment. This suspension of payments will last until Sept. 30, 2020, but you can still make payments if you choose.
Covered California Special-Enrollment Period

Effective immediately, anyone uninsured and eligible to enroll in health care coverage through Covered California can sign up through the end of June.

Eviction Protection

Governor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order banning the enforcement of eviction orders for renters affected by COVID-19 through May 31, 2020. The order prohibits landlords from evicting tenants for nonpayment of rent and prohibits enforcement of evictions by law enforcement or courts. It also requires tenants to declare in writing, no more than seven days after the rent comes due, that the tenant cannot pay all or part of their rent due to COVID-19.
